Workshops with Sean Dye 

• All are for all levels 

• Each has a materials fee for kits that range from $12 - $18 (Payable to Instructor) 

Sean has been recognized nationally as a leading author and expert on mixed-media techniques. He is a professor at the University of Vermont.  

That’s not a Knife…This is a Knife: Painting in Water-soluable Oils 

Friday, August 13 • 9:30am - 4pm 

Fee: $100/$85 members 

Knife painting is the most direct way to apply paint to canvas. Participants will learn Sean’s knife painting dos and don’ts. Painting knife, canvas, and paint will be provided. 

Value Magic: Crash Course in the Study of Light & Dark
Saturday, August 14 • 9:30am - 4pm 

Fee: $100/$85 members 

This is a great way to discover the light and structure in your composition and not worry about color. Dye leads a detailed value study using artist’s oil pastels to help you create more successful paintings.

Beginners to Intermediate

This popular workshop teaches students the basics of drawing and sketching. Learn to really see, and discover the joy of a tree’s shadow, or water splashing against a rock. With very little equipment, students can get lost in the joy of understanding composition, design, and values. Undivided attention given to all.

Concept Development: 

How to Create Unique and Meaningful Art

In this workshop, Katharine Cartwright teaches students how to create meaningful and unique art through a systematic process that begins with concept development and the construction of a working thesis or artist’s statement. Kathy teaches with warmth, humor, enthusiasm, and insight. As an experienced teacher and award-winning artist, she is able to help students develop and improve technical skills in painting as well as concept development.

 Watercolor: Synthesizing East and West

Fee: $700/$600 members

The purpose of this workshop is for artistic enrichment, creative rejuvenation, and spiritual renewal. Mr. Chee shares his creative experiences with the students but doesn’t impose his personal viewpoints upon them. The workshop will stress flexibility, fun, fellowship, and the spirit of caring and cooperation. The schedule will include: a traditional approach, saturated wet process, improvisational approach, crinkling technique, and marbling and monoprinting.

 Landscape & Character in Pastels

Mon., Sept. 20 - Fri., Sept. 24

9am - 4pm

Fee: $700/$600 members

Each workshop begins with a demonstration either from a photo reference or from an outdoor location, if conditions permit. Some of the topics covered include: separating a landscape into planes; how to prepare a paper for pastel painting; the 7 principles used to create the illusion of depth in a painting; the three zones in water; using edges to give this illusion of texture; and the use of thumbnail sketches to find color solutions.
