Intro to Lampworking : Making Glass Beads
Session II: Mon., Aug. 9 - Fri., Aug. 13
Session III: Mon., Aug. 30 - Fri., Sept. 3
All Sessions meet from 6 - 8pm
Instructor: Megan Crimmins
Fee: $250/$220 members
Making glass beads is called lampworking because hundreds of years ago, artisans heated glass using oil lamps. Today a propane/oxygen torch is used to heat glass rods to over 1700 degrees. This workshop is designed for the beginner, no glassworking experience required. Students will be introduced to the basics of shaping colorful glass in the flame of a stationary torch. Using gravity, a variety of tools, color, and form, small treasures will be created. Studio set-up and safety will be discussed, followed by periodic demonstrations and plenty of practice time to get students comfortable with melting glass and to explore surface decoration.
