Kinderwood Program, Ltd., of Early Education

Reaching High but Rooted in the Adirondacks!

Purpose

The Kinderwood Program, Ltd., of Early Education is a not-for-profit agency initiated in 1969 to offer the Central Adirondack Community an educational facility to service the cognitive, affective and practical developmental needs of pre-school children directed  by dedicated and trained personnel.

Since 1969 the Kinderwood Program has served the developmental needs of children in the Central Adirondacks and contiguous communities. It operates three days per week in the Arts Center/Old Forge with 2 ½ hour sessions for three and four year olds. The curriculum based on NYS Education guidelines focuses on the cognitive affective and physical domains of the growing child as well as the social skills of negotiation, cooperation, and fair play among others. Accredited, and experienced instructors supervise the program. The ratio of adults to a class of three year olds is three adults to ten children. Often there are parents in addition. The daily schedule is organized to address the child first as an individual and then the child as part of a group. Activities offered as vehicles though which to accomplish these purposes include the visual/practical arts, music, storytelling, classification and organizational games, and role-play. Kinderwood operates with modest tuition, generous donations given by parents, friends, businesses and fundraising benefits.

Mission Statement

The Kinderwood Program, Ltd. of Early Education is committed to providing a quality education program to the young children who are the future of our community. Individual and group oriented activities serve the cognitive and practical developmental needs of children through perceptual awareness, graded motor activities, primary social interaction, and practical life experiences. Because a sense of respect is based on utter kindness, Kinderwood practices the three C’s: Consideration, Cooperation and Courtesy.

Goals

Kinderwoods goals- as with - the family- are: (a) to urge the child to self- sufficiency, (b) to instill in each an eagerness to learn, (c) to equip each with a basic negotiating-skills foundation for the future, (d) to demonstrate a system of etiquette based on consideration of others (e) to help each arrive at a sense of responsibility for his own behavior and self governance, (f) to provide an opportunity for activities in art, music , reading literature and composing his own stories, (g) respect for differences in others.

The Arts Center/Old Forge is building a new, state of the art, “green” facility that includes a suite for the Kinderwood Preschool Program. We have been offered this marvelous opportunity to honor "Mirnie" Miriam Kashiwa, who volunteered her services for 40 years as founder, director, and head teacher of our children. The Kashiwa Family has come together to help raise the funds needed to name the new Kinderwood Suite the, “Miriam Davis Kashiwa Kinderwood Suite”.

The siblings have pledged to donate 20% of every monetary gift

earmarked for the naming right up to $400,000.
